Update: Law enforcement suspect drunken driver in crash that paralyzed Kalamazoo Public Security officer

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI — A Kalamazoo General public Basic safety Officer who was hurt in a bike crash on his way to operate Saturday morning is in stable condition, a section spokesperson has verified.

In accordance to a GoFundMe, designed to gain Kalamazoo Community Basic safety Officer Tom Maher and the officer’s relatives, the officer will be paralyzed from the waist down and has had portion of a single leg taken out as a consequence of the crash.

Kalamazoo Section of General public Security spokesperson Jay Shatara verified with the Kalamazoo Gazette/MLive Monday early morning that the officer was driving his bike to work when he was hit by a motor vehicle. The driver of the motor vehicle was arrested at the scene, Shatara reported.

Shatara could not confirm what the driver experienced been arrested for, as the circumstance is getting dealt with by the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office. He explained the crash took place in the 5000 block of North Riverview Drive at about 6 a.m. Saturday, July 9.

Shatara confirmed the legitimacy of the GoFundMe, which experienced raised more than $25,000 as of noon Monday. Donations will go towards unpredicted expenditures connected to the incident, the GoFundMe states.

“It’s a sad predicament all around,” Shatara mentioned. “The officer is in secure affliction at this time, that I can explain to you.”

The GoFundMe, designed by Rachel Garnaat on Saturday, July 9, stated that Maher, a married father of a few, suffered critical injuries and will endure various surgical procedures in excess of the next few days.

An update posted yesterday stated that the officer had spinal surgical procedures Sunday early morning and that the procedure went very well, but the doctor stated Maher will be paralyzed from the waistline down and that the decreased section of his still left leg (down below the knee) was amputated through the surgical treatment.

Maher is expected to be hospitalized at Bronson Methodist Healthcare facility for the upcoming two months, the GoFundMe states.

Neither Garnaat nor the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Business office responded to requests for remark from the Kalamazoo Gazette/MLive prior to deadline.
